Privacy Policy
Anam AI: Spiritual Direction (“Anam AI”, “the app”, “we”, “us”, or “our”) is designed to provide contemplative spiritual reflection. It is not a substitute for professional mental health care, counselling, medical advice, emergency support, or pastoral care from a qualified person.
This Privacy Policy explains what information we collect, how we use it, how we protect it, and what choices you have.
1. Information we collect
We may collect the following types of information when you use Anam AI.
Account information
If you create an account, we may collect information such as:
- your email address
- username or display name
- login and authentication details
- account settings and preferences
Spiritual reflection and chat content
When you use the app, you may choose to share personal reflections, questions, prayers, spiritual struggles, journal entries, or chat messages.
This may include sensitive information, such as details about your beliefs, emotional wellbeing, relationships, trauma, grief, religious experiences, or mental health concerns.
By choosing to enter spiritual reflections, chat messages, journal entries, or other sensitive personal information into Anam AI, you consent to that information being collected, used, stored, and processed as described in this Privacy Policy.
Please only share information you are comfortable entering into the app.
App preferences
We may collect preferences you choose inside the app, such as:
- spiritual tradition or voice preference
- language or tone preferences
- theme settings
- notification preferences
- country or region selection for crisis support resources
We do not need your precise location to provide crisis resources. If region-based crisis support is offered, we aim to use country or region-level information only.
Technical and usage information
We may collect basic technical information to help operate, secure, and improve the app, such as:
- device type
- app version
- browser or operating system information
- error logs
- crash reports
- approximate usage activity
- push notification tokens, if notifications are enabled
Crisis safety signals
If the app detects language suggesting suicide, self-harm, harm to others, abuse, or immediate danger, it may trigger a crisis safety response.
We may process this information to show emergency guidance and crisis support resources. If crisis-safety events are logged for safety or debugging, we will aim to keep this data limited, secure, and only as long as reasonably necessary.
Anam AI is not monitored in real time and cannot contact emergency services or another person on your behalf.
2. How we use your information
We may use your information to:
- provide the app’s spiritual reflection and chat features
- personalise responses based on your selected preferences
- save your reflections, journal entries, or conversation history if that feature is enabled
- provide region-appropriate crisis support resources
- send notifications if you enable them
- maintain, troubleshoot, secure, and improve the app
- respond to support requests
- comply with legal obligations
We do not use Anam AI to provide medical diagnosis, mental health treatment, counselling, or emergency intervention.
3. AI processing
Anam AI uses artificial intelligence to generate spiritual reflection responses.
When you send a message, your message and relevant conversation context may be processed by AI systems or service providers in order to generate a response.
You should not enter information that you do not want processed by an AI service.
We aim to limit the information sent for AI processing to what is reasonably necessary for the app to function.
AI-generated responses may be inaccurate, incomplete, or inappropriate. You should not rely on Anam AI for decisions involving safety, health, medical care, counselling, legal matters, or emergency situations.
4. Human review
We do not routinely review your chat or journal content. However, limited review may occur where necessary to troubleshoot issues, investigate misuse, comply with legal obligations, respond to support requests, or improve safety and reliability, subject to appropriate safeguards.
5. When we share information
We do not sell your personal information.
We do not display third-party advertising in Anam AI.
We may share information with service providers who help us operate the app. These may include services used for:
- authentication
- hosting
- database storage
- AI processing
- analytics
- crash reporting
- push notifications
- support/payment links
- crisis resource links
These providers may process information on our behalf to help deliver the app.
The specific service providers used by the app may change over time, but they are used only to operate, secure, support, or improve Anam AI.
We may also disclose information if required by law, to protect the safety of users or others, or to investigate misuse of the app.
6. Crisis and emergency situations
Anam AI is not a crisis service.
If you may harm yourself or someone else, call your local emergency number now, go to the nearest emergency department, or contact a crisis line in your country.
The app may display crisis support information if concerning language is detected, but:
- the chat is not monitored in real time
- Anam AI cannot contact emergency services
- Anam AI cannot contact a friend, family member, pastor, counsellor, or doctor for you
- Anam AI cannot guarantee your safety
7. Data storage and security
We take reasonable steps to protect personal information from misuse, interference, loss, unauthorised access, modification, or disclosure.
However, no digital service can guarantee complete security.
If you create an account, your data may be stored in systems used to operate the app. If chat history, reflections, or journal entries are saved, they may remain associated with your account unless you delete them or request deletion.
To keep the app usable when your connection is unreliable, small pieces of information are stored locally on your device. This may include your theme preference, your acceptance of this Privacy Policy and the safety notice, your chosen tradition, short-lived screen state, and any reflection you wrote while offline that is waiting to be sent. Reflections queued while offline are sent through the same channel as normal messages once your connection returns, and the same safety checks apply on the server. You can remove data stored on your device at any time using Clear local data on this device in your profile’s Privacy & Safety section. Clearing local data on your device does not delete your account or any reflections saved on our servers — use Delete account for that.
7a. Long-term memory (signed-in users)
If you are signed in, Anam AI may store a small set of long-term memory notes about your spiritual life — for example, stable preferences, recurring themes you've named, practices you've committed to, or goals you've stated. These notes are short summaries, never raw transcripts of what you wrote. They are used to make future sessions feel less repetitive and more attentive to your journey.
Memory is only ever used for signed-in users who have accepted the current safety notice. It is never used during a crisis moment, never overrides your selected spiritual tradition, and is never used to store sensitive content such as suicide or self-harm material, abuse, sexual content, medical diagnoses or medication, precise addresses, or other people's names — unless you explicitly confirm a minimal note, and even then only a generic summary is kept.
You can turn memory on or off, view every saved memory, edit or delete any of them, or erase all of them at any time from Profile → Memory. You can also say "remember…", "forget…", or "clear my memories" in chat. Deleting your account also permanently deletes every memory.
8. Data retention
We keep personal information only as long as reasonably necessary for the purposes described in this Privacy Policy, unless a longer retention period is required by law.
If you have an account, you can permanently delete it and all associated data (conversations, journal reflections, bookmarks, push subscriptions, and saved preferences) at any time from the Delete account option in your profile. You may also request deletion by contacting scribblingtheology@gmail.com.
We will take reasonable steps to respond to deletion requests within a reasonable period, subject to legal, security, backup, or dispute-resolution requirements.
Deleted information may remain in system backups for a limited period before being permanently overwritten.
Some limited information may be retained where necessary for security, legal compliance, dispute resolution, or backup integrity.
9. Your choices and rights
Depending on where you live, you may have rights to:
- access personal information we hold about you
- correct inaccurate information
- delete your account or data
- withdraw consent where applicable
- object to or restrict certain processing
- request information about how your data is used
To make a request, contact scribblingtheology@gmail.com.
10. Children and young people
Anam AI is intended for users aged 16 and over who are old enough to understand the nature and limits of an AI-based spiritual reflection tool.
The app is not intended for emergency support, child protection reporting, counselling, mental health treatment, or crisis intervention.
If you are under 16, you should not use Anam AI.
If you are 16 or older but under the age of majority in your country or region, you should use Anam AI only with appropriate parent or guardian involvement where required by local law.
11. Third-party links and services
The app may link to third-party websites, services, crisis helplines, payment platforms, articles, or resources.
We are not responsible for the privacy practices of those third parties. You should review their privacy policies before using them.
12. International users
Anam AI may be used by people in different countries. Your information may be processed or stored in countries other than your own, depending on the service providers used to operate the app.
By using the app, you understand that your information may be processed in this way.
Where required by applicable law, we rely on your consent, the need to provide the app’s services, compliance with legal obligations, and our legitimate interests in operating, securing, and improving the app.
13. Accessing this Privacy Policy
This Privacy Policy is available publicly at /privacy.
It is also accessible inside the app through the Profile page under the Privacy & Safety section.
14. Changes to this Privacy Policy
We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time.
If we make significant changes, we will update the effective date and may provide notice in the app where appropriate.
